BIOGRAPHY


Evmorfia Metaxaki was born in Athens, Greece. She began her vocal studies with Misa Ikeouchi-Kontogeorgiou at the National Conservatory in Athens, where she earned a degree with highest honors and a first prize at the age of 22. She also studied «Opera and Musical Theater» and «Lied and Oratorium» in University Mozarteum Salzburg (Classes: Ks Elisabeth Wilke and Ks Lilian Sukis). She completed her master’s degree in «Opera and Musical Theater» with highest honors and a first prize, and the International Mozarteum Foundation recognized her achievement with the prestigious «Lilly Lehmann»-Medal. During the course of her studies, she was granted with the «Gianna Szel»-Scholarship from the Mozarteum University. She also received the «Lions Amadea»-Scholarship, subsidized by the Salzburg Lions Club. She participated in master classes with Barbara Bonney, Thomas Hampson, Breda Zakotnik, Hartmut Höll/Mitsuko Shirai, Helmut Matiasek. She also attended master courses given by Ks Lilian Sukis and Helena Lazarska at the Mozarteum’s International Summer Academy.

Her repertoire includes numerous roles in the genres of Opera, Operetta and Musical Theater, as well as several Lied cycles and a wide variety of concert literature. The soprano has demonstrated her versatility again and again in performances ranging from the classical to the contemporary. She received her earliest stage experience at the Landestheater Salzburg and as a member of Live Music Now, a project organized by Yehudi Menuhin. She appeared with the Mozarteum University Symphony Orchestra as Susanna in «Le Nozze di Figaro» and as Serpetta in «La Finta Giardiniera». As a concert soloist and a Lied interpreter, she has performed works by Bach, Brahms, Bruckner, Haydn, Monteverdi, Mozart, Pergolesi, Ravel, Rossini, Schubert, Schumann, Strauss, Vivaldi and Wolf in Greece, Austria, Switzerland and Germany.

She joined the ensemble of the Theater Magdeburg in August 2004, where she has performed several roles with great success: Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel), Hirt (Tannhäuser), Lisa (Gräfin Mariza), Ciboletta (Eine Nacht in Venedig), Amor (Orpheus und Eurydike), Quiteria (Telemann’s Don Quichotte), Mercedes del Rossa (Schön ist die Welt), Dinah (Trouble in Tahiti), Pepi (Wiener Blut), Laya (Die Blume von Hawaii), Barbarina (Die Hochzeit des Figaro), Despina (Così fan tutte) and Musetta (La Bohème). In March 2006 she made a guest appearance as Valencienne (Die lustige Witwe) at the Braunschweig Staatstheater. In March 2007 she performed the role of Hirt in Wagner’s Tannhäuser, at the Theatre of Erfurt.

Evmorfia Metaxaki made her Salzburg Festival debut in Mozart’s «Bastien/Bastienne und der Schauspieldirektor» in 2006, where she performed the roles of Mademoiselle Silberklang and Bastienne. Her participation at the festival is a career highlight and also a great honor for the young soprano. Deutsche Grammophon has currently been launching the above production on DVD.

In the 2007/08 season Ms Metaxaki will be appearing as Ilia (Idomeneo), Hirt (Tannhäuser), Gretel (Hänsel und Gretel), Rodelinde (Flavius Bertaridus), Amor (Orpheus und Eurydike), and Sanya (No Sex) at the Opera of Magdeburg. In February 2007 she was awarded the Special Prize for young artists (Förderpreis), by the Magdeburg Theater.
